AU week - telling the tale.

Sin takes Athelstan's hand and leads him through a door and then another, and up a narrow flight of stairs that seem to be hidden in the walls. To another door that looks like it should be locked but isn't. (Or isn't locked anymore.)

The journey leads them into the roof and a flatish section of tiles where they can sit and look out over the lake, protected from the breeze.

"Come, sit with me." Sin strolls across the tiles, sure as a mountain goat till he finds a good spot to sit with their backs against a chimney.

"It's not something you'd want to be all the time," Ragnar says. "But sometimes, it's just great."

"What's it like?" He's comfortable and feeling safe between the two of them. "If it's something you can describe?"

"Being high? Everything depends on the situation for me. Who I'm with, what I'm doing, what I've taken. I could take one pill and walk down a city street and feel nothing but the same pill around a camp fire at a festival with music playing and stars overhead can be a life changing experience."

"But then, I don't often get high for the high's sake."

"I always like the feeling that I ride the high, rather than the high riding me," Ragnar nods.

"What for, then, if not its own sake? Opening yourself up, like that pill you gave me?"

"Exactly that." Sin explains, "to open my senses, to makes myself more aware, transcend my own being."

"Sometimes its an escape from reality, some times I take certain drugs for mood alterations - when I need to deal with something that's upsetting me."

"Altering your point of view, or the way you look at reality," Ragnar nods. "Like mental sunglasses."

"Does it still help with what's upsetting you when the drugs wear off?" Athelstan asks, quietly interested.

"It doesn't help me escape the problem but sometimes it helps me get a bit more perspective on the underlying problem. Like Nepal after Iceland. I needed a away to step out of what happened to think about how it affected me." He explains, without thinking about the fact he hasn't told Ragnar the full story of Iceland.

"Iceland?" Ragnar asks. "What happened in Iceland?"

Athelstan looks at Sin, but stays silent.

Sin shifts a little uncomfortably, aware he's sober now and it's not as easy to talk about.

"I... got caught, snowed-in in a small town in Iceland for the winter with no way out." He shrugs, trying and failing to down play it. "You know how I am, I don't do well trapped." He moves his wrist out of sight.

Ragnar strokes his cheek without crowding him. "Yes, like a bird with clipped wings," he nods. "So once you were free, you flew right up to the top of the world."

"To think about what new things you'd learned about yourself."

Athelstan is carefully not looking at Sin's wrist, only at his face.

"A lot happened to me on those cold, dark months. I needed to be as far away from people as I could to clear my head. And where better than the ceiling of the world?"

"Among the things people should never attempt," Ragnar says, "is fencing in Sin, and fucking a vacuum cleaner."

He states that as a fact.

The last gets a faintly horrified look from Athelstan at the concept.

"I don't think it was people fencing him in this time", he says softly. "It was Mother Nature."

What it gets from Sin is a sweet little giggle. "I believe that's called Hoovering and came fairly high on the list of horror stories told by an A&E nurse I use to hang around with."

He nods to Athelstan. "Yes, Mother Nature had the controlling hand, at least in this occasion. Next time I'ok be staying somewhere less landlocked for winter. Never again, that much I learnt at least."

"Must have been pretty remote if it couldn't be reached at all in winter," Ragnar says, shaking his head. "I'm sorry. But yes, I heard the same stories. May have flirted with a nurse at well, at some stage."

"And there wouldn't have been anything anyone could do to rescue you." Athelstan squeezes Sin's hand, then turns to smile at Ragnar. "Is there a profession you haven't flirted with?"

"I was rescued. Just not in a physical sense." Sin answers, leaning in to kiss Athelstan's cheek in thanks.

"Nurses are very important people to flirt with. You never know when you're going to need one on side."

"And they've got so interestingly gory stories to tell!" Ragnar adds.

"I bet they do. And stories that would embarrass their patients to death if they put names on them."

"Oh yes!" Sin grins. "Hospital people are either heavy drinkers, great customers for recreational drugs or completely stark raving mad."

"And most of the time, utterly cynical, using a blood-curdling jargon," Ragnar adds. "Especially if they work in the ER."
