Sinric takes Athelstan's hand and leads him through an almost invisible door and down a couple of seemingly perfectly flat hallways that somehow open out onto the rooftop and a little flat terrace with a view of the eastern sky.

Sinric clearly spends some time up here because the spot is furnished with a daybed big enough to lay on or for two to sit together comfortingly and is draped with soft furry blankets of a cloth unknown in their time.

He helps Athelstan to the daybed and sits with him, setting the flask aside for now. The stars are still clear in the sky, even as dawn smudges the horizon with warmth.

"The bar makes so many wonderful things. As do the people here. I meet with lady Sunshine and was able to apologies to her for what happened when you brought her to me. She offered me a food called Killer Zebra. It was wonderful!"

"I told you she would forgive you", he says with a smile. "And yes, she makes nothing that's less than delicious."

"I know but I needed to make my apologies anyway." Sinric shrugs. "And I needed to thank her for trying. She is very, very talented. A baker like her could name her price in any court in the Empire and beyond."

"And while she was naming her price from the rich", Athelstan says lightly, "her heart would have her using the income to feed the poor."

"She truly is a kind lady, to look after everyone so." He trails off. "I wish I knew how to thank her better for what she tried to do for me."

"Be her friend", Athelstan advises simply. "Her world is a dark place, I think she can't have too many friends."

He nods and snuggles close, sipping some of the tea. "That I can try to do." Although he is not sure what he has to offer her in friendship or service.

Athelstan shifts to snuggle close to Sinric's side.

"A listening ear can go a long way."

"That I can be." He promises, as much to Athelstan as to Rae. "Do you wish to rest, beloved?"

"To rest, but not to sleep." He turns his head to kiss behind Sinric's ear. "Just to be here with you."

Sinric settles to take Athelstan in his arms so they might watch the beauty of the day together. He trades soft kisses, singing sweetly to greet the gathering dawn.

And Athelstan is content for once, for a while.

Sinric's hands move to Athelstan's shoulders, massaging almost as naturally as he makes love, always seeking some new way to bring Athelstan peace.

Athelstan murmurs his pleasure, moving to slide in front of Sinric to give him better access to his shoulders.

Sinric kisses the side of Athelstan's neck and works his gentle thumbs into the meat of his shoulders, still humming a song.

Something about this song is different - half formed and uncertain in spots, as if Sinric is still writing it in his head.

"Are you making a new song?" Athelstan asks, tipping his head to try and look at him.

He nods and kisses Athelstan's neck. "For my Emperor. I want to tell him about this place, in his last days. I want to sing him all the love and joy I have known here and all the wonders. I want him to know I will be safe and travel and know greater wonders still. I want him to know what he means to me and how I will carry him in my heart forever." He laughs at himself. "But I fear it might be too much to do all at once."

"It might be a very long song", Athelstan agrees. "Or a cycle of them, perhaps."

"Or several nights of story telling as well as song. I hope you will forgive me, for wanting to tell him of you and Ragnar and the love you have shared with me?"

"Sinric, beloved... you must tell him whatever you choose. It can do us no harm."

"I want him to know all. All of who I am and will become. He-" his voice shakes a little. "I love him."

[athelstanthescribe]

"And he loves you", Athelstan says quietly. "And may fear what will become of you when he's gone."

He has no fear for me now for he has no fear for his own end. I don't want to put that fear in him but I don't want to lose him without telling him all of the tale."

He looks down at his hand, silent and still for a moment. "I have been his Aureus, his golden one for so long. I want just once for him to know me as Sinric."

"You mean to sing it for him now? Or only when the end is near?"

He shakes his head softly. "When we leave on campaign. I can't risk telling him within the palace for fear he will turn back."
