Sinric comes down from his room, still dressed his furs and heavily embroiled tunic but looking fresh and scrubbed.

He smiles brightly to see Hannibal.

There's no magic in it but Sinric's voice and heart. And his gift for carrying a crowd.

When he has every heart aching on the dying notes of his song, he shifts.

A happy, bouncing song. The sort that makes people want to sing along. He grins at Hannibal, making an effort to keep the song clean as he shifts to stand on the table.

Hannibal smiles, and starts clapping along, and tapping his foot.

Even the abbot's scowl is lifting a little as Sinric leads a call and response song. It's a Christmas miracle.

Another young monk stands up, his voice rather deep as he takes up the counterpoint. Sinric grins brightly, stepping back a little to let the young man shine.

There are more monks clapping discreetly, or tapping their feet, or rapping the tables now; Hannibal sits back and smiles up at Sinric.

Sinric sits back down, letting the young monks take over the song. The song has become infections and has spread across the room. His job here is done.

He settles at Hannibal's side, so very happy.

Hannibal smiles at Sinric, and raises his glass.

Sinric lifts his own glass and drinks deeply, leaning against his shoulder. More food comes and Sinric makes a point of eating some this time.

Niketas reaches across to give Sinric a pat. "Time hasn't dulled your voice in the slightest."

"It has given him skill, training and a new edge to his repertoire," Hannibal agrees.

"And many new songs." Sinric smiles. "Although I doubt this is the right room for Nippon fisherman's songs." He reaches for more wine.

"People wouldn't understand them," Hannibal chuckles, "so you can just as well sing one."

"I could." Sinric smiles. "But I think my turn is over for now."

He gestures to the young monks, singing together over a complicated hymn and clearly very proud to sing in such harmony.

Alcuin taps Sinric's shoulder gently. "I think these old bones are ready to rest. Walk me back to my room, my boy. The sooner you can come back and enjoy your night."

Sinric bounces to his feet to offer his teacher an arm.

He glances to Hannibal, making sure he's content to stay.

Hannibal is quite content, listening and tasting and soaking up the early medieval monastery to his heart's content.

Niketas sits with him in silence, listening to the monks sing the glory of the new-born Christ.

But there's something heavy in his silence, something unsaid.

"Brother Tertarus?" Hannibal asks, quietly, underneath the music.

"I may be a priest now." Niketas answers softly. "But I'm not above the sins of men. Including jealousy."

He takes a slow breath. "You have done me such kindness, and yet I envy you. He loves you. I hear it in his voice."

"He loves you just as much," Hannibal says, softly. "I have heard it in so many words."

"He told you he harbours affections for me?" Niketas seems shocked. "I thought... at most he saw me as a brother. And even that is more than I deserve."

"Why shouldn't you deserve Sinric's affection?" Dr. Lecter asks.

Niketas shakes his head, leaning back in his seat. He toys with his cup. "A brother- a good and faithful brother, as I should have been to him, should have protected him. Should have done more- to save him from Leo."

"He got away," Hannibal says. "And he went to see all the known world of this time and age."

Niketas ducks his head. "He had a brother. Several in fact but one in particular. The brother he was closest too. I couldn't saved him."

"You can't always save everybody," Dr. Lecter says. "To worry that everything is your fault would be hubris; it would assume omnipotence."

"My sins enumerated." Niketas huffs a laugh. "Hubris, indolence." He sighs and drops his voice. "Lust."

"Hubris means that you truly overestimate yourself; excess humility is just as much an infraction against the philosophical virtue of sophrosyne," Dr. Lecter states. "Indolence is only a sin if somebody else suffers from your inaction, and lust, if the other party said no and you do not stop. Sinric never told you no, so you are free to desire him. You only need to accept that you can't keep him. He's needed elsewhere."

Niketas cocks his head. "You're a better match for Master Alcuin than you are for me. And Sinric has never said no, because I've not expressed my desires. I... wasn't sure how they would be received."

He goes silent for a long moment. "Elsewhere. You mean Milliways?"
